Get BENT - SSION's new album - FREE for a month!

Crosspost from Dangerous Minds.

Meet Ssion, the gender bending electro-punk dance band from Kansas City, led by front person Cody Critcheloe. Is Cody a man or a woman? I'm not completely sure, but it's not important - s/he can be whatever you want hir to be. And as with other current queer artists like JD Samson, Cody likes to play with people's traditional perceptions of style and beauty - witness the trademark combo monobrow and mustache, a pretty risqué fashion move in these anti-hair-biased times

Ssion (pronounced "shun") are a full on audio/visual/performance-troupe well known for their live shows and support slots for the likes of Gossip and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Critcheloe has been making a respectable career as a video director on the side, working with Peaches, Liars and Scream Club. Ssion formed in Kansas in 1996 and released their first material in 2003. The band released their last album Fools Gold in 2007 and with it the full length feature film Boy which compiled all their music videos and has been described as a "gay, punk rock equivalent of Forest Gump." Ssion have taken the step of releasing their new album Bent as a free download for a limited time, and it's definitely worth downloading. As with Tyler the Creator's first album Bastard, it's surprising to hear music released for free that is of this high quality.

Make no mistake though - Bent is pop music. It's party music, it's designed for dancing - for those moments at a friend's house when the sun is coming up, you've had a ball, but you've got that melancholic feeling that to quit now as it's can't get any better. There are shades of very early Madonna here, coupled with the classic mid-80s synth driven sound of the Pet Shop Boys and Eurodisco, all refracted through early 90s NY dance pop like Deee-Lite. Bent is basically the album the Scissor Sisters should have made by now, classy dance music stripped of the chintz (and Elton bloody John references) and honed to a sharp electro-pop point. It's pretty damn good. So my advice to you dear readers is to let a little bit of Ssion into your life - get Bent.

Ssion - "Clown"

Ssion - "Psy-Chic"

Ssion - "Luvvbazaar"

Ssion - "Credit In The Straight World" Excellent cover of Hole Young Marble Giants.

The Niallist - Best of 2010 Mixtape

Here's my 100 minute comp of my favourite tunes of the last 12 months. Ok, so this isn't fully Menergy-tastic, but it does feature a wee bit of synth-disco and to be fair, I have given you loads of mixes this year! This comp features more abstrakt-y elecronica, a smattering of punk and choir boys, and of course a bit of four-four. Most of the tunes are smothered in lashings of synths, so it should be agreeable to sir or madame. For more info I have notes and links on the acts over at www.niallism.com.

TRACKLISTING:

Ben Butler & Mouse Pad - Electric Bamber-Boo
Divorce - Bloody Horn

MASTERS AT WORK The Ha Dance

KENLOU The Bounce

STEVE POINDEXTER Work That Motherfucker

ROBIN S Show Me Love

yes, it's cheesy but it has to be done:
MADONNA Vogue

And even though he'll hate us for saying this, this is TOTALLY going on the list.
This is a produtcion by none other than Daniel Wang, and it's fucking fierce:

CHROMA OSCURA Glow Worms

Oh, and I left "Deep In Vogue" by Malcolm McLaren & The Bootzilla Orchestra (William Orbit & Mark Moore Banjee Realness Mix) off this list because I posted about it below, but THAT is the ultimate vogue house track.

FIERCE RULING DIVAS BALL Music Pt 1

Our good friend, legendary producer and DJ Daniel Wang says

"There are three anthems that you must have and play at a ball:

No.1 MFSB Love Is The Message

No.2 DIANA ROSS Love Hangover

No.3 LOOSE JOINTS Is IT All Over My Face (Female Vocal)

"

There's a few more we'd like to add to that list:

Pete Burns will never release another record (digitally).

Xposted from Shallow Rave.

Icon of 80s excess Pete Burns (of Dead Or Alive fame) has made the following startling announcement through his current record label:

"'BRISTAR' RECORDS ANNOUNCEMENT!

It is with extreme sadness, and absolute anger, that I have to announce that no further releases will be made available via digital download in the future.

This decision has been made due to the illegal posting of Pete Burns record 'Never Marry An Icon' by various individuals on YouTube, and other 'share' sites, less than a week after release. They call themselves 'Fans', but they are really the enemy! A blatant act of piracy, which is as much a product of YouTube's scandalous lack of clearance policy, which should verify ownership of copyright in any item posted on their website, but never is! And is, as far as this record label is concerned, one of the major reasons for the decline of a music industry, dying as a result of YouTube's total lack of ethics, discretion, or morality, both personally and legally.

The promo video release for 'Never Marry An Icon' has now been cancelled.

The 12'' Extended Club Remix of 'ICON' ( due for release 21/09/2010 ) is now cancelled.

All future releases by Pete Burns and Dead or Alive will be in 'physical CD & DVD format', and can only be obtained via pre-order, and pre-payment, through bristarrecords@gmail.com. Full name & postal address, together with an International Money Order, Postal Order, or Certified or Personal Cheque, will be required, at least 30 days in advance of release. Address for remittances will be sent via return email upon receipt of orders.

'THE ART' by The DIRTY DISCO featuring 'PETE BURNS', will be the next release on BRISTAR RECORDS. RELEASE DATE - NOVEMBER 1st. 2010. Formats - 7'', 12'' EXTENDED CLUB MIX, Instrumental Version.Info & Pre-Order at bristarrecords@gmail.com

All future CD/DVD releases will contain copyright management code embedded in the audio signal to prevent copying and sharing via the Internet, and will be numbered and barcoded, in order to prevent copyright breaches, as mentioned above. And to ensure a clear legal pathway to identify and prosecute any copyright theft of our product.

Obviously, the cost of obtaining future recordings and product will be higher for production and distribution of physical CD/DVD Packages, than a simple download. But Piracy is a crime, and we must make a stand against it, and people like, aliceathens@yahoo.gr , and the other people who have posted 'Never Marry An Icon' on 'share' sites, and who seem to think offering another persons work for free, without permission, must be stopped! Please feel free to contact Alice at her email address above, and get her reasons for sabotaging and destroying Pete Burns opportunity for chart placings and T.V exposure for his first solo single! Thanks to all of you for your continued support!

Lotsa Love!
Yours sincerely...,
Steve Coy
BRISTAR Records
"

There is so much wrong with this that I should hardly have to point out (and I'm not even talking about the decision to publish the email address of the supposed leaker). I sincerely doubt that any label who has spent money on a 12" mix and a promo video would decide to shelve them because of a leak (onto bloody Youtube of all places) but I do find the idea of Burns' future advances being stumped up by his fans as quite interesting. I hope there's a "satisfaction or your money back" clause - especially after hearing the single itself:

Just found this amazing pre-Hi-NRG (gasp!) footage of Divine, on a subject that a lot of people know only too well. Legend!!

Teamy: Hi-NRG Mix

Glasgow scene legend and non-stop party whore Teamy is soon to be gracing our ones and twos. He even promised to do it in drag. As a taster, here's a Hi-NRG mix he made for his club night Fun Size with with Glasgow's No. 1 (straight) disco bear David Barbarosa.

Love Is A Stranger

Annie does drag - this is just ridiculously fierce! From the awesome "Synth Britannia Live At the BBC" show which aired a few months back.

Menergy on Radio Magnetic

A few months ago The Niallist and Kid Zipper did a two hour radio show for Little Rock Records on Radio Magnetic, as a Menergy precursor, and excuse for general self-whoredom. The kids liked it so much they started taking their clothes off - Tiga even dropped by to have a naked oil wrestle with Kid Zipper while The Niallist and Dalai Dahmer go-go danced on either side in shiny silver thongs.

Glasgow based Italo love-machines Den Haan are one of our favourite bands. If you haven't heard their super-slick disco anthems then get yourself over to their soundcloud page. "Night Shift" is already a Menergy anthem. They're great DJs too - here's a wicked mix they've made:
