HOT MESS this Friday!

Well, it looks like the tidal wave of Gay Dance Parties is spreading throughout the land like a virus. Next city to succumb is our neighbour Edinburgh.

This Friday sees the launch of a new night at the Wee Red Bar, called "Hot Mess" hosted by our friend Simonotron (Club For Heroes/Devil Disco Club). When asked for the inspiration behind the night, Simon had this to say:

"For a long time, gay clubs seem to have become confused by the playground definition of 'gay' and consequently put on club nights that are lame and a bit rubbish, like fake Adidas trainers from Poundstretchers. Thankfully a few club nights like HMD, Menergy and LUYD are turning things around by putting on gay parties where top-quality DJing and a sense of irreverent fun go together to create something wonderful."

Name dropping us? Thank you Darling! The soundtrack to Hot Mess will be a mix up of disco, house, Hi-NRG, Italo and acid, while we are also promised that:
"The sounds will be accompanied by the HOT MESS non-stop video show, featuring x-rated space-cadets, bulging y-fronts, day-glo leotards and more moustaches than you’ve ever dreamed of. With all this going on you can expect lot...s of big smiles and plenty of hands in the air (maybe a few down your pants, too)."

It Gets Better

Here's a new campaign that's been started by US sex advice columnist Dan Savage called "It Gets Better". It aims to tackle REAL teenage suicide (no seriously, don't do it) by LGBT kids, by proving to them that life after high school does get better, in a series of testimonial clips by older members of the gay community. Savage has opened up the floor to anyone who wants to make a clip, all will be linked/posted on Youtube. Just turn on the camera and tell people why you think life as a queer person gets better after school. What an amazing idea! I can't wait to see the submissions, I reckon some of them are gonna be fierce - we here at Menergy might even be tempted to record some. I mean, who doesn't like showing off for the camera? And if it helps end situations like this, then all the better.

Peaches Christ pres "All About Evil" TOMORROW NIGHT

There's a very special event happening tomorrow night here in Manchester. San Francisco drag legend Peaches Christ is debuting her film "All About Evil" at a very special one-off midnight screening at the Cornerhouse cinema. There is going to be a drag show before the film, a "Gore Couture" beauty contest, songs, dance, love, laughter, blood, death, AND we hear that some concerned community groups are planning to picket the screening! Rip them to shreds, I say.



Tickets are almost gone for this horror spooktacular, so if you do fancy it, be sure to get down early. The film itself is fast gaining a cult reputation, and stars some serious legends like Mink Stole, Natasha Lyonne, Cassandra Peterson (aka Elvira Mistress of the Dark), Patrick Bristow (from Showgirls/Austin Powers) and more. And as if THAT wasn't enough, Peaches also hosts a midnight-movie screening series called "Midnight Mass", at which each film is accompanied by a corresponding drag show and audience participation is heartily encouraged. You will be delighted to know that they have shown Heathers, but the big show each year, which attracts up to 1500 people (some in costume, some in very little) is none other than Menergy's other favourite film Showgirls!! FEROCHE! There are plans afoot to get a convoy from the UK over to next year's screening. R.I.P. Aaron Carl

Sad news coming in from Detroit - producer and performer Aaron Carl died earlier today while undergoing treatment for cancer. As well as being a dance music legend Aaron was a major force on the out-gay dance scene, releasing gay-themed classics like the clips below.





Aaron was truly fierce, it's a great loss to lose someone so warm and vital. There's a Facebook page dedicated to his memory. Our thought go out to his friends and family - Aaron you will be missed! Nxx

Illamasqua & The Art of Darkness

As many of you will know, my favourite makeup brand is Illamasqua, for its extremely pigmented products and rock & roll attitude and aesthetic. 'Makeup for your alter ego', regardless of sex, gender or sexuality. Their latest collection for A/W, 'Art of Darkness', really gets that across with a collection of 13 very different characters - including a gypsy queen, a wolf-man and an androgyne.



Today their International Makeup Artist, Mika, was in town.

He was good enough to translate the 'Wanton Woman' look onto my glorious countenance, with stunning results.

Gaga v Paglia v Burchill

More Gaga news (in a roundabout way) - the other week noted American feminist author/critic/academic Camille Paglia published an article in the Sunday Times on how Gaga is the death of sexuality. I think she's missing the point of Gaga, and compares her too closely to her beloved Madonna (and Bowie) without assessing her on her own terms. There's a pretty decent reply piece from the Guardian here.



HOWEVER, the real juice in all of this, I discovered, is the battle between Paglia and British writer/critic Julie Burchill (best known for writing TV's Sugar Rush, and being a "hip young gunslinger" at the NME 35 years ago). Now, I am in no way a fan of Burchill, but the wordy spats between these two feminist titans are definitely worth a look.

It starts with:

Lady Gaga v Don't Ask Don't Tell

In case you hadn't heard, Lady Gaga turned up at a rally to protest the US Military's archaic and homophobic "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy earlier this week. Gwan yersel hen! Unfortunately though it didn't work, as the repeal of the policy was blocked by those pesky politicians. Oh how much better the world would be without them! Pete Burns will never release another record (digitally).

Icon of 80s excess Pete Burns (of Dead Or Alive fame) has made the following startling announcement through his current record label:

"'BRISTAR' RECORDS ANNOUNCEMENT!

It is with extreme sadness, and absolute anger, that I have to announce that no further releases will be made available via digital download in the future.

This decision has been made due to the illegal posting of Pete Burns record 'Never Marry An Icon' by various individuals on YouTube, and other 'share' sites, less than a week after release. They call themselves 'Fans', but they are really the enemy! A blatant act of piracy, which is as much a product of YouTube's scandalous lack of clearance policy, which should verify ownership of copyright in any item posted on their website, but never is! And is, as far as this record label is concerned, one of the major reasons for the decline of a music industry, dying as a result of YouTube's total lack of ethics, discretion, or morality, both personally and legally.

The promo video release for 'Never Marry An Icon' has now been cancelled.

The 12'' Extended Club Remix of 'ICON' ( due for release 21/09/2010 ) is now cancelled.

All future releases by Pete Burns and Dead or Alive will be in 'physical CD & DVD format', and can only be obtained via pre-order, and pre-payment, through bristarrecords@gmail.com. Full name & postal address, together with an International Money Order, Postal Order, or Certified or Personal Cheque, will be required, at least 30 days in advance of release. Address for remittances will be sent via return email upon receipt of orders.

Obviously, the cost of obtaining future recordings and product will be higher for production and distribution of physical CD/DVD Packages, than a simple download. But Piracy is a crime, and we must make a stand against it, and people like, aliceathens@yahoo.gr , and the other people who have posted 'Never Marry An Icon' on 'share' sites, and who seem to think offering another persons work for free, without permission, must be stopped! There is so much wrong with this that I should hardly have to point out (and I'm not even talking about the decision to publish the email address of the supposed leaker). I sincerely doubt that any label who has spent money on a 12" mix and a promo video would decide to shelve them because of a leak (onto bloody Youtube of all places) but I do find the idea of Burns' future advances being stumped up by his fans as quite interesting. I hope there's a "satisfaction or your money back" clause - especially after hearing the single itself:

RIP Glenn Shadix

Well it looks like Menergy is going to be a double tribute on Heathers night. We've just found out that the cult actor Glenn Shadix has died.



As well as starring as the priest in Heathers ("Eskimo!"), he was best known as Otho the interior designer in Beetlejuice, and lent his vocal skills to many cartoons. Here he is in a very fetching black suit and red tie ensemble:



And here he is relating the story of how as a teenager he was given shock treatment to "cure" him of his homosexuality.



Glenn, you were a great actor and an alt-gay icon. You will be missed!
